January will be a busy month as the Boy Scouts of America kick off a year long celebration of the 100th Anniversary of their founding. If you watch the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day, watch for the BSA float that will celebrate 100 years of service. My understanding is that it will be escorted by 300 Eagle Scouts. The preview sketches I have seen of the float are awesome and to have it escorted by the very best of the Scouting Program will be quite a site to see.
Our Cub Scout Pack will be holding their annual Pinewood Derby in late January. Each member of the pack received a Pinewood Derby in late January. Each member of the Pack received a Pinewood Derby Car kit for the boy to make his own race car. The cars are raced down a slanted wooden track in an elimination contest until only one is a winner. Various prizes are awarded by the Pack for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers as well as car designs. This is a fun Saturday event for the entire family to enjoy.
The Scout Troop will be participating in the annual Del-Mi District Winter Camporee at Camp K the end of the month. Pray for snow because it is actually warmer to camp in snow than without it this time of year. Snow actually acts as an insulator. The Scouts are preparing to test their skills not only to survive camping in the cold weather, but their other Scouting Skills as well. Five boys from the Troop served as a Color Guard for the Indianapolis Colts home football game on Sunday, December 13. The Scouts represented our Troop and community very well as they did an outstanding job in presenting our Nations flag for the National Anthem before the game.
The Venture Crew continues to collect aluminum cans to help pay their expenses for their trip to the Florida Sea Base this summer. If you have any aluminum cans, or aluminum of any kind, they will be happy to take it.
We have a new Eagle Scout, Joe Kinder, who passed his Eagle Board of Review in November. Joe will be holding his Eagle Scout Court of Honor at a later date. We have several other boys who are working on their Eagle award and should finish sometime during the year.
The Scouting Program has been a part of our ministry to youth in the area since 1976. All three units appreciate the support that Cicero United Methodist Church provides them.
